Licenses & Approvals
There are a number of legislative requirements for the establishment and operation of a coal mine, including requirements to obtain project approvals, licences, leases, and the preparation of management plans in conjunction with government departments.
A basic summary of each licence & approval is provided below. More detail is available on the corresponding pages.
Major Project Approvals
These are the main approvals for the site, including Project Approval from the NSW Department of Planning & Infrastructure, and Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act (EPBC) approval from the Commonwealth Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities.
Minor Project Approvals
These include Review of Environmental Factors (REF's) for projects outside of the Project Approval area, and the Mining Operations Plan (MOP).
Environmental Management Plans
Environmental Management Plans are required under the Project Approval, and are used to manage environmental impacts at the site.
Mining Leases
Mining Leases allow mining to be undertaken at the site.
Licences
Licences include the Environmental Protection Licence issued to the site, and Exploration Licences.
